It’s a bit hard to look at the latest IL-2 Sturmovik expansion 1946, simply because the title includes not only the original game, but all expansions released to date and content of Pacific Fighters. On this point, it is a phenomenal value and a fan of the SIM card that no one should be without. But rather than simply re-review the original game, Pe-2 Forgotten Battles, Ace Publishing, and Pacific Fighters, we’re just going to focus here on the new content that longtime fans of the series is in 1946.
The basic premise is that the war between the USSR and Germany go beyond the basic flight test in a Me-262 jet era shows lot of operational service against each other. Try to get a He-162 from the cockpit of a Yak-15 is not a story you read about in history books, but this is not a reason not to 1C find a way create the conditions for such a meeting in their last game. Even better, they added loads of new content in the rest of the match.
Fortunately, these are the exception. Most missions have you involved in activities far more interesting. To high-speed bombing in your Arado 234 in the new campaign is certainly a thrill Rebel new to us. Even better is the end of the campaign Glory IJA glowing. Although it begins with the usual blur Hellcat in your A6M5 on the waters around Iwo Jima, you’ll eventually findyourself out of combat B-29 raids in the skies over Japan.
Several major new maps were added. The card is an excellent Manchuria (and plausible) set of conflicts between the Russians and Japanese, while the card can finally Burma refight some players fighting the Flying Tigers. ‘‘ (The addition of a controllable Ki-27 Nate makes the battles even more convincing.)
Unfortunately, the new scripted missions yet to provide the human dimension that was missing from the series of campaigns to date. There are interesting stories behind the briefings and league tables, you can use to track your progress, but each mission still feels a bit cold and detached from any sense of human drama. If you have already read a fact-focused, emotionless after action report, you understand all that is missing here.
Not surprisingly, attention to detail is commendable. Even when the game turns in the field of speculative history, things are treated as realistically as possible. The new jets are integrated in the alternative history of the game scenario in a way that makes sense and conflicts that arise from leaving campaign ‘‘historic seem very plausible.
The rest of the features here – AI, graphics, sound, interface – have not changed since the last version. Competition is still difficult with a good sense of energy management, aircraft went down to the last rivet with all kinds of beautiful moving control surfaces, and the mission of the basic configuration remains as practical as ever. In short, if you liked aspects of the series before, you will not be disappointed here.
FINAL REMARKS
For forty dollars, you can not really go wrong here, especially since this version of the game includes each extension that the series has seen so far. It’s a shame there is not much content here American or British, but it’s expected. There is nothing here that will appeal to all those who were not already a fan of the game, but for those of us who liked the series in the past, 1946 is a great excuse to box up all the old records and paste them into the back of a closet.
